Prologue: History of Sliders
Celestia, a mysterious world where deceased beings from both reality and fiction end up. Despite being deceased, Celestians lead a life that closely resembles their previous lifestyles.
People usually imagine heaven as the place above filled with clouds. That’s not true; Celestia looks very similar to planet Earth. North and south poles are covered in ice and snow. There are areas filled with volcanic activities or covered in sandy dessert. There’s also a vast ocean that engulfs everything that is not land. In the places where climate is just right for life, societies of Celestians strive.
Difference between Celestians and Earthlings is that; being already dead, Celestians do not age and die. There are only two ways that Celestian can truly die. The first way is when one becomes tired of eternal life. One can choose to reincarnate into world of the living. The reincarnation process will completely erase your old self. The second way is when they are murdered in some physical manner. In this case, depending on amount of malice involved in the murder, there is a high chance that the spirit of the killed Celestian will turn into a demon. This is not a proper way Celestian should die. Demons are creatures filled with negative emotions. If demons go rampant and kill Celestians, more demons will be created.
In the early history of Celestia, there were no demons because Celestia was a peaceful place where everyone got along peacefully. Then somewhere along the line, people of Celestia began to change. People started carrying around negative emotions and sometimes hurt fellow Celestians with those emotions. This gave rise to first of the demons.
Worried that Celestia will be overrun if demons aren’t kept in check, Celestians created an organization of people with unique powers. This organization’s job was to stop the spreading of demons by exterminating them.
With the help of this organization, the spreading of demons was kept in check inside Celestia. However, Celestians soon realized that some demons in Celestia arrived from other dimensions. After some research, the organization realized that demons can also be created by negative emotions of Earthlings from the reality realm. Since nothing fictional can exist inside the reality realm, all demons created from reality realm move into the fictional realm where they start their rampage.
Deciding that the safety of Celestia alone wasn’t enough, the organization decided to stop the spread of the demons across the whole fictional realm. Thus, many dimension traveling techniques were developed over time. Because their members ‘slide’ between fictional worlds, the organization came to be known as Sliders.
Sliders watch over fictional realm and Celestia, exterminating demons that harm the residents. For young people in Celestian society, becoming a Slider is everyone’s dream. However, becoming a Slider isn’t easy. You must pass the entrance exam that tests you in both mental and physical abilities. These exams are held yearly in the capital city of Celestia. This story begins in one of that entrance examination day.
